General Questions

A QR code (Quick Response code) is a two-dimensional barcode that can be scanned using a smartphone camera. It can store various types of information such as URLs, text, contact information, and more. When scanned, it quickly directs users to the encoded information.

Static QR codes have their content directly encoded in the QR pattern. Once created, the information cannot be changed without creating a new QR code.

Dynamic QR codes contain a short URL that redirects to the actual content. This allows you to change the destination content without changing the QR code itself. Dynamic codes also provide scan analytics and more features.

Most modern smartphones can scan QR codes directly with their camera app. Simply open your camera, point it at the QR code, and tap on the notification that appears. Some older devices may require a dedicated QR code scanner app.

Creating QR Codes

Creating a QR code is simple:

  1. Go to our Generate page
  2. Select the type of content you want to encode (URL, text, email, etc.)
  3. Enter your content details
  4. Customize the appearance if desired
  5. Download or share your QR code

Chameleon QR supports multiple content types including:

Yes! Chameleon QR allows you to customize:

  • Colors (foreground and background)
  • Shape of the dots
  • Add a logo in the center
  • Add text above or below the code

Using QR Codes

The minimum recommended size for a printed QR code is 2.5 x 2.5 cm (1 x 1 inches). For optimal scanning:

  • The viewing distance to size ratio should be approximately 10:1
  • For a distance of 1 meter, the QR code should be at least 10 cm wide
  • Always include a quiet zone (white space) around the QR code

Yes, but only with dynamic QR codes. Our dynamic QR codes provide analytics including:

  • Number of scans
  • Scan locations (country and city)
  • Devices used
  • Time and date of scans

Static QR codes do not provide any tracking capabilities.

For dynamic QR codes, simply:

  1. Log in to your Chameleon QR account
  2. Go to your QR codes dashboard
  3. Select the QR code you want to update
  4. Edit the content as needed

The QR code pattern itself remains the same, but the content it leads to will be updated.

Static QR codes cannot be updated after creation. You would need to create a new QR code.

Technical Questions

Error correction allows a QR code to be readable even if part of it is damaged or obscured. There are four levels:

  • L (Low): 7% of data can be restored
  • M (Medium): 15% of data can be restored
  • Q (Quartile): 25% of data can be restored
  • H (High): 30% of data can be restored

Higher error correction makes the QR code more reliable but also more dense (more dots).

Yes, QR codes have capacity limits depending on the type of data:

  • Numeric only: up to 7,089 characters
  • Alphanumeric: up to 4,296 characters
  • Binary data: up to 2,953 bytes
  • Kanji/Kana: up to 1,817 characters

However, for optimal scanning speed and reliability, we recommend keeping content as concise as possible. For Dynamic QR codes there is no limit to the amount of data that can be encoded, since the content is stored on our servers.

QR codes themselves are not inherently secure or insecure - they're simply a way to encode information. However, users should be cautious about scanning unknown QR codes, as they could lead to malicious websites.

Chameleon QR ensures that all generated QR codes are safe and lead to legitimate content.
